CASON DEL BUEN RETIRO
This building and the neighbouring Army Museum are the only architectural
remains of what was the Buen Retiro Palace, built for Philip IV in the 17th
Century. Much of the park that surrounded it has been preserved and hence
its name "del Retiro".
At the Casón (which literaly means "big house" but was
coined for the building in the last century as an allusion to its ruinous
state), the Prado Museum exhibits its 19th and early 20th Centuries painting
collections, along with part of its sculpture collection from the same period.
All the Exhibition Halls sited in
the Casón del Buen Retiro (Alfonso XII St., 28), are closed since
the 2nd of August of 1997, due to the remodelling works that are being developed
at this building.
